Charles Ahovissi, African Culture Connection Founder, joins Victoria Beaugard, participant in African Culture Connection’s program at Girls Inc, in receiving the 2012 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award from First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House on November 19th, 2012.
African Culture Connection was one of 12 programs chosen from over 350 nominated to receive the 2012 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award. The award recognizes that we’re making an important contribution to the youth we serve by helping them build the critical learning and skills that will help them succeed in school and in life. This is the highest honor in the United States for after-school and out-of-school time programs like ours.
Award recipients are selected by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. African Culture Connection, based in Omaha, Nebraska, is the only organization in the state to ever receive this award.

This was the best fine arts residency I have experienced for students in 29 years of teaching. The best thing was how hands on it was, the students were captivated by the instruments and the dances, which they were able to experience first hand. We would give Charles our highest recommendation!
Charles did a wonderful job keeping the kids engaged. Even kids who have a hard time staying focused were able to participate the entire time. We thank Charles for sharing his talents and his culture.
The residency provided opportunities which would be impossible for the teachers to provide. Your enthusiasm was outstanding.
